Why Metal Trumps Tile for Your New Home Build

If you've been planning the build of your new home for some time, you may be determined to craft a property that is not only functional and good-looking but also fully efficient. You've always got an eye on the environment and want to make sure that you do not exceed a certain size in terms of your carbon footprint, so you need to build the structure from materials that are best suited. You may be turning your attention to your roof and believe that tiles may be your only option, but you could consider metal as an alternative for so many good reasons. What do you need to think about as you plan to put a roof over your head?

Resource Saving

With your environmental hat on again, you may be determined to gather as much rainwater as you can, and the roof will be your greatest resource. You need to divert as much water as possible into your tank, but concrete tiles may not be the best solution. These tiles can absorb a certain amount of water, unlike corrugated metal. This material will have a bonded finish that will repel water instead and divert it down to your tank.

Weight Saving

You want your home to be as open as possible and do not want to use too many materials to finish the interior structure. You will need to be very careful when it comes to the configuration of your roof in this case as the weight will be very important. Terracotta or concrete tiles are somewhat heavier than metal, especially if they absorb all of that rainwater. You may find it difficult to balance the extra weight on top of your streamlined structure, so you will need to plan carefully.

Energy Efficient

Energy efficiency is very important to you, and you need a roof that can reflect as much of the sun's heat as possible. This will allow you to turn your air conditioner up but only if you install a corrugated metal roof. This is far more reflective than the alternative.

Fire Resistant

If you live in a bushfire zone, you know how important it is to craft your home from special materials. Corrugated metal sheets are recommended, as they are more fire repellent than tiles.

Making Your Choice

Compare your options side by side in relation to your primary goals. Talk with your roofing suppliers about each solution, such as Colorbond roofing, and they will help you to make your final decision.

About Me

Installing a New Roof

I have always dreamed of owning my own home so when the chance arose to buy a property in Sydney, I jumped at the chance. I was really pleased with the place. However, I soon discovered that there was one serious problem which I had to deal with - the roof. The property was about 100 years old and the roof was in a very bad condition. The first thing I did was to contact a roofing company. They sent out a contractor who assessed the roof and recommended that I have it replaced. The contractors visited the following week and started work on replacing the roof. They did an excellent job and they really sparked my interest in roof restoration and repair.
