Benefits of using recycled materials for your roof restoration project

If your roof has run its course, you may be considering how to replace it. Roof restoration is an excellent option for breathing new life into your roof without having to tear everything off. During a restoration project, strategic repair and maintenance work is carried out to make your roof function almost as good as new.

When looking for new components to replace damaged roofing, consider taking advantage of recycled parts. For example, recycled steel, aluminium and tile are all useful during a restoration project. Wood fittings for the siding can also be made from recycled timber.

There are many reasons why using recycled materials will benefit your roof in the long run.

1. Reduce the amount of iron ore being extracted

In the case of metal roofs, remember that much of the metal used in the economy comes from mining iron ore. Excessive mining results in barren land that can barely be used for any other purpose. Furthermore, miners have to move lots of earth just to get a small quantity of iron ore.

Recycling metals can help prevent environmental degradation that would otherwise occur from excessive mining.

2. Reduce landfill waste

During roof restoration, components such as metal fasteners, flashing and clips can all be recycled or reused. Because you're not tearing out the entire roof, reusing as many parts as possible will reduce how much waste you have to send to landfills. You will also save on waste disposal costs by reducing how much waste will end up on your property after the project is completed.

3. Save on repairs and maintenance

If you re-use parts that you already know are functioning properly, you're less likely to need frequent repairs. Indeed, there's always a level of uncertainty when purchasing new parts. Even if the manufacturer approves them, not all components may work as expected. Re-using what you already know works well is a useful strategy for any roof restoration project.

4. End up with a long-lasting roof

Taking advantage of recycled parts will enable you to get the most out of your old roof. Instead of having to purchase a new roof entirely, recycling also gives you the opportunity to save on costs because you can simply restore your old roof.

This means that you can get 15 years or more out of your asphalt shingles, 20+ years out of slate roofs and over 60 years from metal roofs.

About Me

Installing a New Roof

I have always dreamed of owning my own home so when the chance arose to buy a property in Sydney, I jumped at the chance. I was really pleased with the place. However, I soon discovered that there was one serious problem which I had to deal with - the roof. The property was about 100 years old and the roof was in a very bad condition. The first thing I did was to contact a roofing company. They sent out a contractor who assessed the roof and recommended that I have it replaced. The contractors visited the following week and started work on replacing the roof. They did an excellent job and they really sparked my interest in roof restoration and repair.
