Tips When Installing a Skylight in a Home

Skylights come in different forms. For example, you can install a fixed skylight, one that you can open like a window, or a sun tunnel. Plus, they come in different shapes and sizes. To help you choose the best option for your situation, consider the following tips.

Sun Tunnels

Some compact areas in your home may not demand a massive skylight. But instead, they may only need limited illumination. For example, what about a closet, built-in wardrobe or hallway? In these areas, you could install a sun tunnel rather than a skylight. Sun tunnels consist of a compact roof-dome that joins a tube, crossing through the roof cavity to the ceiling plaster, to end at a diffuser. With one of these set up, you can open a closet or wardrobe and enjoy daylight wafting around the space, making all clothes, shoes and whatnot findable. Similarly, a hallway lit by a sun tunnel will feel bright, open and spacious. As a bonus, you'll save on lighting bills by using what is natural and free.

Skylight Size

Your contractor can help you discover the right size skylight to install. An overly huge skylight can overwhelm a room and look out of proportion instead of enhancing the space with sunshine. On the other hand, a skylight that's too small will be ineffectual. Instead of one large skylight, you might fancy several smaller skylights arranged across the room. That way, light will reach more areas and not focus on one place. Though, a diffuser does scatter and diffuse the light around the room in any case.

Domed Versus Flat Skylights

A skylight can form different contours as they rest on the roof and capture sunlight. Rather than installing a flat skylight, you might consider a dome skylight. Their curved silhouette catches additional light rays that can bend and flow through to your home. As well, rain and debris will more easily slide off a rounded rather than a flat surface. So, even during a deluge, you'll have a better outside view.

While a dome creates an attractive rounded shape on the roof, a flat skylight follows the roof angle and pitch, creating a sleeker look. They can favour different materials also. For example, flat skylights support glass or acrylic, and domed versions often use acrylic. Other possible skylights shapes include pyramid or polygon skylights which offer varied light-capturing surfaces.

Regardless of whether you brighten up a compact area or open up a room with several skylights, your home will be more inviting and energy-efficient. Again, your installer can help with choosing the best size and shape.

About Me

Installing a New Roof

I have always dreamed of owning my own home so when the chance arose to buy a property in Sydney, I jumped at the chance. I was really pleased with the place. However, I soon discovered that there was one serious problem which I had to deal with - the roof. The property was about 100 years old and the roof was in a very bad condition. The first thing I did was to contact a roofing company. They sent out a contractor who assessed the roof and recommended that I have it replaced. The contractors visited the following week and started work on replacing the roof. They did an excellent job and they really sparked my interest in roof restoration and repair.
